Overview
The Connecticut Emerging Infections Program (EIP) is a collaborative effort between the Yale School of Public Health and the Connecticut Department of Public Health, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Yale office of the CT EIP participates in a national network with 11 other sites. The EIP participates in surveillance, applied epidemiology, and public health response activities for numerous infectious diseases including respiratory infections (RESP-NET: influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, SARS-CoV-2), healthcare associated infections at the community interface (HAIC: C. difficile), fungal disease (candidemia), human papillomavirus associated precancers and cancers (HPV-IMPACT), and several foodborne illnesses (FoodCORE). Research assistants and other surveillance officers in each program area contribute to program implementation and collection of public health data via primary (medical chart, patient/provider interviews) and secondary data sources, conduct of laboratory surveys, and data entry, cleaning and analysis.
This Research Assistant position will have focus on RESP-NET activities and serve as senior surveillance officer. They will provide oversight of and support for a team of surveillance officers and student research assistants to ensure timely collection of data about hospitalized cases of influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, and SARS-CoV-2 infections. This role serves as a primary resource for protocol and data-collection questions, represents Connecticut on network-wide calls and meetings, provides surge capacity by shifting priorities as needed, monitors team priorities and project goals, and trains student research assistants. The Research Assistant also leads special initiatives (e.g., geocoding, newsletter production) and initiates original analytic projects that strengthen data dissemination and impact. This position may also assist with epidemiologic evaluation studies. In addition to RESP-NET, this position may support other EIP program areas as needed.
Required Skills and Abilities
1. Proven experience with public health surveillance, collection of public health data and data management.
2. Strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
3. Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word), electronic medical systems (Epic, Cerner, and Meditech) and medical terminology, data management software (e.g. REDCap, SAS and/or R).
4. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
5. Proven ability to handle sensitive information confidentially and professionally.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
1. Bachelor's/Master’s degree in public health, microbiology, or related field; experience with applied public health work in the public sector.
2. Understanding of infectious disease surveillance methods and procedures.
3. Intermediate/advanced training in data management software, such as REDCap, SAS, R, SQL or Python.
4. Familiarity with quantitative research methods.
5. Proven experience as an Epidemiologist 1 or equivalent position.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Researches and collects data through site or home visit intakes; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for research projects. 2. Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Modifies and plans research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments. Assists in research design. 3. Writes and edits material for publication and presentation. Reports on status of research activities. Oversees and instructs research and support staff on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance. 4. Schedules and coordinates research activities. Identifies and recruits study participants. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. 5. May assist in preparing financial information and monitoring budgets. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.
