Overview
Works Independently under the general supervision of the Veterinary Research Associate and the Core Director of the PET Center. Responsible for various aspects of PET imaging studies involving rodents, non-human primates, human and other species. Prepares and cares for animals throughout studies including transport, anesthesia induction and maintenance and post-anesthetic care, emergency care, collection and processing of blood samples. Oversee the animal colony, including reporting on research and animal health. Acts as a liaison between staff, researchers, internal and external users. Recordkeeping. NHP training and general care including providing environment enrichment. May participate in other studies and help in other areas of the PET Center. Cleaning and upkeep of the research area. Will work with radiation, including drawing, reading and injecting radioactive doses. Job may include cross-training and coverage in other responsibilities within the Biomedical Imaging Institute.
Required Skills and Abilities
1. Prior experience with animal handling techniques (in environments such as research, animal hospital, veterinary office, animal shelter, pet store, or farms). Compassion for animals.
2. Willingness to work with animals such as NHPs and other species and radiation.
3. Excellent organizational skills and ability to perform complex experiments from start to finish.
4. Strong communications skills. Regular exercise of independent judgment or initiative.
5. Strong attention to detail. Flexible based on operational need, shift schedules and patterns may be altered. Computer Program Literacy.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
1. Bachelor's degree in a related field.
2. Advanced level knowledge of animals, animal anesthesia, induction drugs and anesthetic machines and ventilators.
3. Proven experience with rodents and injections.
4. Proven experience working with radiopharmaceuticals.
5. Proven experience on a research study. Proven experience with non- human primates.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for research projects. Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data using scientific or statistical techniques. 2. Modifies and plans research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments. Assists in research design. Writes and edits material for publication and presentation. Reports on status of research activities. 3. Oversees and instructs research and support staff on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance. Schedules and coordinates research activities. Sets up, operates, and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus. Modifies equipment according to experimental specifications. 4. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May monitor hazardous work areas and laboratory safety. Prepares related reports. May prepare financial information and monitor budgets. 5. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities. Required Education and Experience Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.Job Posting Date
