Overview
Following established rules and procedures, search for and retrieve materials in support of a variety of Access Services operations functions, including Interlibrary Loan, Borrow Direct, and physical item retrievals. Retrieves materials from various locations and collections within the SML-Bass complex, including the SML stacks, Music Library stacks, film archive, Microform Reading Room, and curatorial collections. Exercises independent judgment following established rules and procedures to find materials when they are not in their designated location. Prepares retrieved materials for delivery according to a variety of processes, including duplication of barcodes, wrapping items with appropriate sleeves, loaning in Alma, tracking and updating items in the Borrow Direct software application, and processing items in Alma. 

Creates item records for monographs and serial issues.  Receives materials to satisfy Borrow Direct requests. Tracks receipt of items in Borrow Direct software, and creates item records as needed in Alma.  Receives and sorts materials delivered from other institutions for Borrow Direct and Interlibrary Loan requests. Routes materials to appropriate locations for processing. According to established weight restrictions and preservation guidelines, packs Borrow Direct, Interlibrary Loan and home delivery materials for shipping. Produces shipping labels and uses shipping memos to verify addresses are correct. Completes return of materials lent for Borrow Direct requests to other institutions.  Updates Borrow Direct software. May assist with shelving, sorting, and other collections maintenance functions.

Delivers materials to Sterling and Bass Library hold shelves, study carrels, the shipping room and other locations. Shelves items on the Sterling and Bass hold shelves and removes materials from hold shelves.  Assists patrons in finding materials on the self-serve hold shelf and with use of self-service check-out terminals. Locates articles for scanning requests and produces scanned files, using given citations. Identifies materials in need of preservation attention and refers appropriately according to established workflows. May be required to work holiday/recess days, and/or to substitute evenings and weekends. May be required to assist in disaster recovery operations. May be assigned to work at other University locations.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate tactfully and effectively with a diverse population. Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated ability to compose original correspondence and simple procedures using correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

2. Demonstrated ability to effectively complete tasks in a busy public services setting, with accuracy and attention to detail despite frequent interruptions.

3. Ability to work effectively in a team environment where team members have some individual and some cooperative responsibilities.

4. Demonstrated proficiency in using Integrated Library Systems (e.g., Alma), email, Internet browsers and multiple Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel). 

5. References must indicate reliable attendance, punctuality, self-motivation, and diligent performance.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills

1 Demonstrated proficiency in using Alma, Borrow Direct software (ReShare), scanning equipment and software (e.g., Adobe).

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 50 lb, to push book trucks, carry heavy volumes, reach high shelves, climb ladders, work in locations with dust, and stand or sit for long periods of time.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Charges, discharges and renews library materials. 2. Processes and maintains related records. Collects fines. Recalls overdue books. 3. Prepares bills and bursary reports. May assign, renew or cancel library privileges. 4. Receives, sorts, and records the receipt of serials and monographs. Adds issues. Maintains and updates holding records. Verifies the receipt of material. Claims missing issues. 5. Uses computer terminal to input and retrieve bibliographic data. Maintains catalog card files. Identifies and corrects discrepancies. Sorts and files material in alphabetical; or chronological; order. Maintains related records. 6. Formats and keyboards correspondence, forms, form letters, reports and other material. 7. Provides information on library services and procedural matters to patrons and staff. 8. Assists in locating materials. May bind books and repair bindings. 9. May instruct or provide work direction. Performs clerical functions incidental to library activities. Required Education and Experience One year of related work experience and a high school level education; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
