Overview
The Research Associate will oversee and coordinate the daily operations of a vector-borne infectious disease research laboratory with a focus on mosquito and tick biology. Responsibilities include tick and mosquito rearing, molecular biology research, animal studies, and laboratory management in support of ongoing basic and translational research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) and research program leadership. The individual will maintain laboratory organization and compliance, assist with experimental design and execution, support graduate students, undergraduate students, and postdoctoral associates in their research activities, and help train new laboratory personnel. The Research Associate will ensure adherence to all institutional safety, regulatory, and research compliance requirements.
Required Skills and Abilities
1. Demonstrated ability to independently plan, organize, and execute multiple complex research projects and laboratory experiments. Strong technical and analytical skills with careful attention to experimental detail and documentation.
2. Ability to accurately follow and troubleshoot complex, multi-step experimental protocols with minimal supervision, while understanding the scientific rationale underlying procedures.
3. Strong interpersonal skills with a positive attitude, collaborative mindset, and proven ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
4. Excellent organizational, time management, oral communication, and scientific writing skills. Ability to learn and implement new laboratory techniques and manage multiple ongoing projects simultaneously.
5. Proven experience training and mentoring students, research associates, and new laboratory personnel in laboratory procedures and experimental techniques.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
1. Proven experience with standard molecular and immunological techniques, including: ELISA, Western blotting, Immunohistochemistry, qPCR.
2. Proven experience working in infectious disease, vector biology, entomology, or related biomedical research environments is highly desirable.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority. 2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. 4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory. 7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments. 8. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Job Posting Date
