QA Engineer– Low-Level HWIO

Generalmotors
Milford, Michigan, United States of America Mid Level Full-time

Job Description

The Team:

The MSP (Mechatronic Software Platform) organization is responsible for building and operating the common mechatronic software platform that underpins GM’s SDV strategy. MSP provides reusable infrastructure, integration patterns, and tooling for mechatronic ECUs so feature and application teams can deliver value quickly and safely across programs.

The Role:

We are seeking a QA Engineer to validate low-level Hardware Input/Output (HWIO) software for embedded automotive controllers. This role focuses on verifying HWIO functionality at the interface between software and hardware, including I/O, communications, and ASIC-driver-related behavior, and supporting the HWIO software verification and regression phase of the development lifecycle.

The engineer will work closely with HWIO developers and cross-functional teams to ensure released software is robust, traceable to requirements, and ready for downstream integration. The role requires strong hands-on testing skills, comfort working with benches, and the ability to identify, reproduce, analyze, and clearly communicate issues found during regression and feature validation.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Develop, maintain, and execute validation plans and test cases for low-level HWIO features across BSP validation domains, including I/O-focused validation areas.
  • Perform HWIO software verification and regression on target benches and hardware setups to validate software releases before downstream use.
  • Review requirements and test inputs requirement sources, and ensure tests align to the latest approved content.
  • Use available bench configurations, and signal definitions to determine required hardware inputs, outputs, and expected behavior for validation.
  • Analyze regression results, compare deltas across builds, and identify failures, gaps, and release risks with clear technical writeups.
  • Investigate issues observed during testing, support root-cause analysis, and partner with development teams to drive defects through verification and closure.
  • Support both manual and automated test execution, including situations where bench limitations or software dependencies require targeted manual validation.
  • Help improve test coverage, validation workflows, common scripts, and repo structure to increase reuse and test readiness across controllers and modules.
  • Coordinate with QA, development, and integration teams on test readiness, missing dependencies, shared images, and hardware/firmware setup issues.

What Success Looks Like:

  • HWIO features are validated with strong coverage against requirements and expected hardware behavior.
  • Regression results are accurate, timely, and actionable for release decisions.
  • Defects are identified early, documented clearly, and driven to verified resolution through strong collaboration with development teams.
  • Bench setups, signals, and test environments are used effectively to reproduce issues and improve confidence in release quality.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 2 years of testing experience.
  • Experience testing embedded software or low-level controller software in a hardware-connected environment.
  • Working knowledge of hardware/software interaction, including digital and analog I/O, communications interfaces, and controller-level validation.
  • Experience creating and executing structured test cases, documenting results, and communicating defects with clear reproduction steps and technical evidence.
  • Ability to work with bench hardware, lab equipment, logs, regression reports, and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot unusual and difficult issues in embedded systems.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Experience with automotive embedded systems and controller validation.
  • Familiarity with C, low-level driver behavior, or HWIO software concepts.
  • Experience with tools such as Lauterbach, Jenkins, or other embedded validation and diagnostics tools.
  • Experience validating software against requirements documents such as CTRS/HSIS and tracing defects through Jira-based workflows.
  • Familiarity with regression reporting, delta analysis, and release-support activities in a fast-paced automotive software program.
