Software Engineering Manager - IT Platforms Global Maintenance & Workplace Safety
Job Description
The Role
General Motors is seeking a Senior People Leader to lead a software engineering and software configuration team supporting the Sustainable Workplaces, Global Maintenance, and Global Workplace Safety IT platforms. This leader will set platform strategy, guide solution delivery, and drive talent, operational, and business outcomes by partnering across IT and business stakeholders to deliver scalable, reliable solutions that enable safe, efficient, and sustainable workplace operations globally.
What You'll Do
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of software engineers, software configuration specialists, and other technical professionals supporting global enterprise platforms.
- Build and sustain an inclusive, high-performing team culture grounded in accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and GM behaviors.
- Drive workforce planning, hiring, performance management, succession planning, and career development across the team.
- Set clear direction, remove obstacles, balance priorities, and ensure the team is equipped to meet evolving business and technical needs.
- Define and evolve the IT strategy and roadmap for the Sustainable Workplaces, Global Maintenance, and Global Workplace Safety platforms.
- Align platform investments and priorities with business capability needs, enterprise architecture, cybersecurity requirements, data strategy, and operational objectives.
- Identify and lead opportunities to modernize platforms, simplify processes, improve integrations, and increase reliability, scalability, usability, and supportability.
- Lead the design, configuration, enhancement, integration, testing, deployment, and support of enterprise IT solutions across supported platforms.
- Ensure disciplined delivery execution through clear requirements, sound technical decisions, and effective release and change management practices.
- Partner with architects, product and program teams, and other technical teams to deliver secure, stable, supportable solutions that meet quality, performance, and operational expectations.
- Build strong relationships with business, operations, safety, maintenance, facilities, and IT stakeholders to align priorities and deliver measurable outcomes.
- Establish and monitor KPIs, service levels, and operational metrics while driving governance, issue management, financial stewardship, vendor coordination, and continuous improvement.
Your Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Significant experience in software engineering, enterprise application delivery, software configuration, or platform management.
- Proven people leadership experience leading experienced technical teams and driving performance, development, and delivery outcomes.
- Experience defining platform strategy and translating business objectives into executable roadmaps and solution plans.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence technical and business decisions across multiple stakeholder groups.
- Experience supporting large-scale, business-critical IT platforms in a complex enterprise environment.
- Strong communication, prioritization, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Experience working in environments with global stakeholders, operational dependencies, and competing priorities.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge
- Experience with commercial enterprise platforms, including SAP and IBM Maximo.
- Experience supporting workplace safety, maintenance, operations, or manufacturing-related IT platforms and business processes.
- Experience with enterprise integrations, cloud-enabled architectures, data and reporting solutions, and platform modernization initiatives.
- Familiarity with Agile delivery models, DevSecOps practices, service management disciplines, and product or program governance.
- Experience working with external vendors, implementation partners, and managed service providers.
- Strong understanding of application lifecycle management, platform support models, and operational excellence disciplines.
