Overview

Under the direct supervision of the Cytology Manager, assist in daily preparation of non-gynecological specimens; support patient registration team in all activities, including but not limited to: accessioning, registration, filing (slides, blocks, documents, etc).

Full-time, 37.5 hrs., 2PM - 10PM. Holidays and recess period may be required in rotation.

Essential Duties:

  • Case intake of specimens/ triage (includes use EPIC/BEAKER transport system)

  • Accession non-gyn specimens and ancillary testing added to them.

  • Call in any problem cases to clients

  • Send back any problem cases to clients needed

  • Look up any issues in EPIC/ print off paperwork needed in EPIC

  • Prepare specimens such as Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsies, body fluid samples, specimens from special procedures, cell blocks and other samples for analysis and diagnosis using specialized laboratory techniques which include but are not limited to: specialized laboratory tests for the processing of ThinPrep specimens on the ThinPrep 2000 processor, preparation of cytospin specimens on the Shandon Cytospin processor and the preparation of cell blocks on the Hologic Cellient processor, as well as traditional cell block preparation for the Histology technicians.

  • Label and coverslip slides, both manually and with use of the slide stainer and coverlip instrument.

  • Use of Histology Asset Tracking System (HAT)

  • Filing slides

  • Maintains QC of slides for consistent staining

  • Stain, label and coverslip processed specimens. Correlates paperwork with processed smears. Filters stains and reagents. Prepares specialized solutions.

  • Maintains daily charts/ logs when necessary (temp logs, QC stains logs, processing logs, etc)

  • Instructs and trains support staff and new employees

  • Ordering supplies, maintains inventory

  • Performs maintenance on processing instruments when applicable

  • Follows all HIPAA privacy regulations at all times

  • Comply with Safety protocols at all times

  • Perform additional duties incidental to laboratory function.


Required Skills and Abilities
1. Ability to multitask and problem solve.

2. Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology. Experience in a clinical laboratory setting.

3. Strong Computer skills.

4. Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff.

Preferred Skills and Abilities
1. Experience with EPIC and CoPath systems.

2. Experience with SurePath and Thin Prep Processing and Imaging Systems.

3. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs as needed.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Performs laboratory tests and procedures in such areas as histology, medical technology, cytology, and cytogenetics. Records results. Interprets results of tests and procedures. Makes preliminary analyses of results. 2. Sets up, operates and maintains laboratory equipment. Instructs support staff on laboratory techniques. 3. Prepares specimens, tissue, bodily fluid samples, and other matter for analysis and diagnosis using non-routine laboratory techniques. 4. Stains and mounts slides; prepares solutions and media; and cultures tissues. 5. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. Performs additional functions incidental to laboratory activities. Required Education and Experience Four years of related work experience, two of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level education; or two years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
