General Purpose:
Under the direction of the Director Operations, provide a broad range of duties to support the Transportation and Material Management function of the Yale Animal Resources Center (YARC).
Essential Duties:
1. Operate a motor vehicle to pick up and/or deliver animals or materials around various YARC locations. Adjust driving to local traffic and weather conditions.
2. Plan the most efficient route to minimize fuel consumption and time loss.
3. Ensure the safety and condition of the animals being transported.
4. Observe and evaluate animals for signs of illness, stress and deviations in animal conditions. Feed, house and handle animals in accordance with all regulations.
5. Operate motorized as well as manual forklift and pallet jacks.
6. Handle animals as per SOPs and load animals into transport containers and transport racks. House animals on arrival at destination.
7. Clean and/or decontaminate vehicle as required to maintain proper standards and clean vs. dirty protocols.
8. Ensure the proper maintenance of the vehicle; check lights for proper operation; check safety equipment; check fluid levels. Notify appropriate personnel of maintenance and/or repair needs.
9. Process and organize documentation related to material inventory and warehouse operations.
10. Work closely with supervisor to plan, set up and maintain an organized warehouse.
11. Inventory equipment and supplies.
12. Become knowledgeable of complete operation of all animal care processing equipment on both clean and dirty side and/or specific washing center.
13. Perform rodent euthanasia.
14. May perform additional related tasks as necessary.
**Must Pass YARC (Yale Animal Resources Center) Health Screening. ** This form is filed with Employee Health in a confidential file specific to employees who work at YSM Buildings. Offer is contingent upon successful passing of health screening.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 5:30am-1:30pm NOTE: Occasional Weekend hours
Required Skills and Abilities
1. Possess a valid Connecticut driver’s license. Ability to pass annual DMV background check and Department of Transportation health certification.
2. Ability to understand and use short notes, basic written instructions and forms. General knowledge of computer use, and ability to monitor email. Ability to follow YARC standard operating procedures.
3. Ability to manage multiple tasks independently. Ability to work effectively and flexibly with a diverse group of individuals within a large department.
4. Sensitivity to and appreciation of research animals.
5. Ability to push/pull 300 lbs.

Principal Responsibilities
1. Observe and evaluate animals for signs of illness and stress and deviations in animal conditions. 2. Feed, house and handle animals in accordance with institutional, local and Federal regulations. 3. Perform animal care with veterinary oversight which may include specialized drug administration, sample collection, and pre- and post-procedural care. 4. Maintain records of treatments. 5. Provide husbandry and specialized services for animals in animal colonies. 6. Maintain, sanitize and decontaminate animal rooms and facilities within low to moderate hazardous areas, e.g. BL2. 7. Perform rodent euthanasia services according to established standards and practices and/or assist in non-rodent species euthanasia. 8. Maintain required records according to institutional, local and federal regulatory standards. 9. Serve as a source of information to investigators and support staff on animal handling, restraint, and pre- and post-procedural care or sanitation services. 10. May train and/or instruct staff on sanitation, animal handling, restraint and care techniques appropriate to level. 11. Perform periodic decontamination, maintenance and rotation of equipment in facility washing centers. 12. Operate animal care processing equipment on either clean or dirty side and/or specific washing center; diagnose mechanical, technical and/or process problems. 13. Maintain inventory of supplies. 14. May act as a driver; operating vehicle in order to pick up and deliver animals and materials to assignment locations, applying proper animal handling and care protocols. 15. Perform additional related tasks as necessary. Required Education and Experience Four years of work experience, two of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level education; or two years of work experience and an Associate’s Degree, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
