About the opportunity
Amentum is leading a joint venture (JV) delivering a Framework Contract for the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), providing intellectual support services to the nuclear decommissioning programme across multiple European sites.
The JV supports JRC in accelerating decommissioning and waste management activities through provision of technical and programme support services, including:
Project and programme management
Licensing
Radioactive waste management
Radiation protection
Decommissioning and nuclear engineering
Worksite management and safety
Non-nuclear engineering
Facility supervision and quality assurance
Job Purpose
Provide technical expertise for the management of radioactive waste arising from decommissioning activities at JRC facilities. Support the development and implementation of waste management strategies in compliance with Italian, EU, and IAEA regulations and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Waste Management Planning
Develop and implement radioactive waste management strategies.
Support waste minimisation and waste hierarchy initiatives.
Prepare waste treatment, conditioning, packaging, transport, and disposal plans.
Coordinate interfaces between decommissioning and waste management activities.
Waste Characterisation
Define waste characterization programmes.
Assess radiological and chemical inventories.
Review sampling and analysis methodologies, and non-destructive testing requirements.
Review assay and analysis results.
Classify waste according to local regulations.
Regulatory Compliance
Ensure compliance with:
IAEA Safety Standards
Euratom requirements
Italian nuclear regulations
Environmental legislation
Support preparation of licensing and regulatory submissions.
Interface with regulatory authorities and stakeholders.
Technical Support
Review contractor deliverables and technical studies.
Support design and operation of waste storage facilities.
Monitor waste treatment and conditioning activities.
Provide technical recommendations to project management teams.
Requirements
Essential:
Master's degree in Nuclear / Environmental Engineering / Waste Management / Physics or related scientific discipline
Significant experience in radioactive waste management.
Experience supporting nuclear decommissioning projects.
Knowledge of waste characterization, treatment, conditioning, storage, and disposal.
Experience working in regulated nuclear environments.
Strong team collaboration, stakeholder management and communication skills
Good analytical thinking and problem-solving skills required
Desirable:
Experience with EU-funded or international nuclear projects.
Experience at research reactors, fuel cycle facilities, or legacy nuclear sites.
Regulatory engagement experience.
