The Tax Manager, Corporate Tax at CIBC will support the Bank’s corporate tax function with a primary focus on income tax provision and tax compliance. This role is responsible for assisting with the preparation and review of the quarterly and annual tax provision under ASC 740, supporting tax-related financial reporting and disclosures, and managing federal and state income tax filings. The position will also contribute to tax research, audit support, and ongoing monitoring of tax law and regulatory changes affecting the business.

The ideal candidate will bring strong technical knowledge in corporate tax accounting and compliance, experience working with complex tax matters, and the ability to collaborate effectively with Finance, Accounting, and external advisors. This is a strong opportunity for a tax professional who is detail-oriented, analytical, and comfortable working in a dynamic financial services environment.

Key Responsibilities:
Tax Provision and Reporting

  • Lead and support the preparation and review of the quarterly and annual income tax provision in accordance with ASC 740
  • Prepare and maintain supporting workpapers for current and deferred tax calculations
  • Assist in the preparation of tax-related financial statement disclosures and footnotes
  • Monitor deferred tax assets and liabilities, valuation allowances, uncertain tax positions, and other tax accounting matters
  • Partner with Accounting and Finance to ensure tax balances are accurately reflected in the financial statements
  • Support internal and external review processes related to tax accounting and reporting

Tax Compliance

  • Manage and support the preparation, review, and filing of federal and state income tax returns
  • Coordinate quarterly estimated tax payments, extensions, and other required tax filings
  • Help ensure compliance with applicable tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements
  • Maintain organized and audit-ready documentation supporting tax return positions
  • Coordinate with external service providers and advisors, as needed, on return preparation and specialized tax matters

Tax Research and Advisory Support

  • Research tax law changes, technical issues, and emerging regulatory developments affecting the Bank
  • Prepare concise summaries and recommendations regarding the tax impact of business activities, new products, transactions, or accounting changes
  • Assist with tax planning initiatives that support efficient and compliant tax outcomes
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of tax policies, processes, and controls

Audit and Cross-Functional Support

  • Support responses to tax authority notices, audits, and information requests
  • Partner with internal stakeholders across Finance, Accounting, Treasury, Legal, and business teams on tax-related matters
  • Help identify opportunities to improve tax processes, controls, and reporting efficiency
  • Contribute to a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the tax function

Qualifications:
Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in corporate tax, public accounting, or a combination of both
  • Strong experience with income tax provision and tax compliance
  • Solid knowledge of ASC 740 and corporate tax accounting principles
  • Experience preparing or reviewing federal and multi-state income tax returns
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain tax matters clearly to non-tax stakeholders
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience working with tax software and financial systems

Preferred

  • CPA, MST, or other relevant advanced tax/accounting credential
  • Experience in the banking or financial services industry
  • Familiarity with tax issues affecting financial institutions and bank holding companies
  • Experience supporting tax audits, controversy matters, and tax process improvement initiatives.

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role you’ll have the flexibility to manage your work activities within a remote (if non-local) or hybrid work arrangement where you’ll spend 3 days per week on-site in Chicago, while other days may be remote.

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package. This role has an expected salary range of $135,000.00 - $165,000.00 for the Chicago market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position. The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which may also include a discretionary bonus component.
