Responsibilities:
The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) is seeking an innovative Senior Laboratory Specialist to join the Target Fabrication Group within the Experimental Division. In this role, the successful candidate will assemble millimeter-scale targets used in experiments conducted at the OMEGA Laser Facility.Key responsibilities include supporting small-scale, complex research projects; organizing research materials and supplies; maintaining equipment and job-related apparatus; and providing guidance to staff on technical problems, procedures, and special projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assembles millimeter-scale components in a cleanroom environment. Develops and installs operating procedures for the laboratory. Develops and modifies test methods, selects procedures for data collection and handling, develops or arranges for computer programs for conversions and statistical treatment of data.
- Independently operates complex scientific equipment with responsibility for developing critical research data. Designs or collaborates in designing sophisticated research equipment. Evaluates the performance of research equipment, making design changes or developing new approaches for its use.
- Coordinates service support, including the repair of equipment, requisitioning of supplies and research materials, and minor construction. Recommends expenditures for major laboratory equipment and construction.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree and 5 years of relevant experience required
- Master's degree and 2 years of relevant experience preferred
- PhD preferred
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Soldering millimeter-scale components in cleanroom environment preferred
- Knowledge of operating and troubleshooting vacuum deposition systems in cleanroom environments preferred
- Must be skilled at operating vacuum leak instrumentation preferred
- Must have knowledge using compressed gas systems preferred
