Amentum is seeking a Shipwright to support a unique US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia. The Shipwright will be responsible for constructing, repairing, and maintaining marine vessels and components in accordance with engineering drawings, blueprints, and shipbuilding specifications. This position performs precision layout, fabrication, installation, and repair of wood and structural components used in vessel construction and dry docking operations.
Job Responsibilities:
- Construct, repair, and maintain marine vessels in accordance with blueprints, ship plans, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
- Lay out and mark reference points, centerlines, and alignment locations on shipways, dry docks, and building docks using transits, levels, plump bobs, measuring tapes, and other instruments.
- Build and install keel blocks, bilge blocks, cradles, shoring, and support structures used during vessel construction, repair, and dry docking operations.
- Fabricate, fit, and install wooden structural components including furring pieces, aprons, uprights, framing, blocking, and other shipboard assemblies.
- Install and secure metal fittings, plates, bulkheads, and structural hardware to wooden vessel components using bolts, fasteners, braces, augers, mauls, wrenches, and other hand and power tools.
- Measure, cut, shape, and assemble wood and other construction materials to precise specifications.
- Inspect structural components and completed work to ensure proper alignment, fit, and compliance with project requirements.
- Operate woodworking machinery, portable power tools, lifting equipment, and material handling equipment safely and effectively.
- Perform repair and replacement of damaged structural components during vessel maintenance and overhaul activities.
- Interpret work orders, blueprints, technical drawings, and written instructions to determine project requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while following applicable safety regulations and procedures.
- Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all occupational safety and environmental requirements.
- Support dry dock operations, vessel launches, recoveries, and maintenance projects as assigned.
- Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
- Complete required documentation and report project progress to supervisors.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the nature and level of the position.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Five (5) years of experience as a Shipwright or in a related marine construction, carpentry, or ship repair trade preferred.
- Ability to determine appropriate tools, equipment, and materials necessary to complete assigned work.
- Experience repairing and maintaining equipment and structural systems using hand and power tools.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
- Passport must be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
- Ability to obtain country-specific visas per the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
- Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance throughout the duration of deployment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
- Employees must read, speak, and comprehend English to the extent that they can perform the contract requirements and comply with installation emergency procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in commercial shipyards, naval shipyards, or marine repair facilities.
- Strong manual skill and proficiency with woodworking and construction tools and machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, ship plans, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
- Prior experience working in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce
- Excellent organizational, time management, and customer service skills.
- A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle. Valid country driver’s license. and passport.

Working Environment
This position is located on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote overseas location supporting U.S. Government operations. Employees may work in office, industrial, warehouse, port, airfield, and outdoor environments and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, inclement weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.
Physical Requirements
Requirements may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements associated with assignment to a remote overseas location.
