Senior Mechanical Engineer - Vehicle Integration & Assembly (ECU)
Job Description
The Role
General Motors is at the forefront of the transformation of automotive through the electrification of our portfolio and the development of leading-edge central compute and autonomous capabilities.
Our Central Compute Hardware (CCH) Mechanical Design team is a dynamic, high-energy group focused on developing enclosures for next-generation Electronic Control Units (ECUs) shared across future ICE and EV vehicle programs. The team is responsible for the mechanical, EMI, and thermal design of compute-related electronics using first-principles engineering, CAD, and analysis while collaborating closely with GM vehicle integration teams, in-house electrical design teams, and external suppliers.
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Level 7) with strong Siemens NX and Teamcenter proficiency to support the development of GM’s Software Defined Vehicle electronics. This role is remote-first and is focused on CAD ownership, product data management, interface coordination, and design execution for ECU housings and related hardware. The engineer in this role will partner closely with senior technical experts and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver robust, manufacturable designs into production while providing periodic onsite support for key prototype builds, design reviews, and verification activities.
Responsibilities
- Create, maintain, and improve high-quality 3D CAD models and assemblies in NX for ECU housings, brackets, seals, mounting features, connector interfaces, and vehicle integration content.
- Develop and release 2D drawings with appropriate GD&T, critical-to-function callouts, and tolerance considerations to support robust and manufacturable components.
- Perform advanced CAD ownership activities including package studies, fit and clearance reviews, interference checks, section analyses, and swept-volume evaluations to identify issues early and drive practical design solutions.
- Support the mechanical design of electronics packaging, housings, and enclosures from concept through production release in collaboration with senior and staff engineers.
- Design mechanical components such as castings, injection moldings, stampings, gaskets, PCBA mounts, and structural or vehicle interface features under program timing constraints.
- Own day-to-day Teamcenter responsibilities for assigned content, including structure management, BOM authoring, revision control, release readiness, and engineering change execution.
- Manage CAD and product definition updates resulting from design reviews, build learnings, supplier feedback, and program changes while maintaining strong data integrity and traceability.
- Coordinate cross-functional interface definition with vehicle structures, packaging, electrical, PCB, and supplier teams to ensure mechanical content is compatible with adjacent systems and vehicle constraints.
- Drive definition and coordination of error-proofing, bracket/interface features, and related mechanical integration details needed to support assembly robustness and vehicle implementation.
- Participate in DFM, DFA, and DFx reviews with suppliers and manufacturing partners, incorporating feedback into CAD and drawings to improve manufacturability, quality, cost, and release maturity.
- Present CAD, drawing updates, packaging status, and key mechanical risks in design reviews and cross-functional stakeholder meetings.
- Follow and help improve CCH mechanical design standards, templates, and best practices for NX modeling, drawing quality, Teamcenter usage, and release execution.
- Provide periodic onsite support for prototype builds, engineering verification activities, fit checks, and issue resolution when hands-on presence is needed to close key development risks.
Qualifications – Required
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- 6–10+ years of mechanical design experience in complex assemblies such as automotive products, electronics, or similar systems.
- At least 3+ years of hands-on experience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter in a production development environment.
- Demonstrated expertise in NX including:
- Parametric 3D part and assembly modeling
- Drawing creation and detailing to ASME standards
- Use of expressions, reusable features, and modeling best practices for robust designs
- Packaging studies, interference analysis, and design problem solving in complex assemblies
- Demonstrated proficiency in Teamcenter including:
- Managing large assemblies and configurations
- Structure management and BOM authoring
- Release and change management, including ECRs, ECNs, and revision control
- Solid understanding of mechanical fundamentals including solid mechanics, materials, tolerance analysis, GD&T, and basic heat transfer.
- Experience collaborating across disciplines and locations, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple CAD, data, and release tasks in parallel while prioritizing effectively and delivering to program timing.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote-first environment while maintaining close collaboration with onsite and cross-functional teams.
- Willingness to travel periodically for prototype builds, design reviews, testing support, and other critical onsite program activities.
Qualifications – Preferred
- Experience with electronics packaging such as ECU housings, compute modules, power electronics, or similar enclosures.
- Familiarity with EMI/shielding, sealing and water management, and thermal management concepts for electronics hardware.
- Experience preparing inputs for, coordinating with, or reviewing structural, vibration, and thermal analysis activities.
- Experience supporting vehicle integration work, interface definition, and mechanical coordination with body, bracket, or packaging teams.
- Familiarity with automotive product development processes including release, change control, validation support, and launch execution.
- Experience working directly with suppliers to mature designs and resolve manufacturability, quality, and timing issues.
- Familiarity with DFMEA, PFMEA, and structured problem-solving methods.
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field is a plus.
