Overview
We are currently seeking a Senior Data Manager/SAS programmer who, in collaboration with lead data managers and programmers, will provide both data management and statistical programming support for federally-funded and commercially-funded clinical research and epidemiological studies. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team that includes other data managers and programmers, epidemiologists, and operations staff. You will play a critical role in the collection and management of data for these studies by developing databases, workflows, and reports to support the full lifecycle of a study. You will lead the design and implementation of complex data processing programs and automated data management workflows that support clinical research and public health programs. This position is responsible for building scalable data management systems, streamlining data exchange, and implementing robust quality assurance processes to maximize data integrity. Responsibilities
- Lead data management activities for clinical, observational, and epidemiologic research studies from study start-up through database closeout, ensuring data are complete, accurate, and fit for purpose.
- Design, develop, and maintain study databases and data management processes, including data collection instruments, validation rules, data specifications, data cleaning procedures, and data transfer processes.
- Perform advanced SAS programming to clean, transform, validate, integrate, and manage complex research datasets and develop reusable and automated programming solutions.
- Develop and execute data quality and validation procedures, including programmed data checks, data reconciliation, discrepancy resolution, and independent QC of datasets, programs, and deliverables.
- Integrate and reconcile data from multiple sources, ensuring consistency, completeness, traceability, and appropriate documentation of data transformations and decisions.
- Develop and maintain study datasets, reports, extracts, and data releases to support investigators, statisticians, and other study stakeholders, including interim data cuts and final study deliverables.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to data management and programming staff, including work planning, risk identification, technical guidance, and promotion of consistent programming and QC practices.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure compliance with study requirements, organizational SOPs, applicable regulatory and privacy requirements, and established data management and programming standards.
Qualifications
- B.S. degree in computer science, health sciences, or other related field; seven or more years of experience with programming and data management in health research. OR,
- M.S. degree in computer science, health sciences, or other related field; five or more years of experience with programming and data management in health research.
- Advanced SAS programming capabilities, including extensive experience with DATA and PROC steps, macro programming, data transformation and integration, complex data validation, and development of efficient, reusable programming solutions.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex research data, preferably within clinical, observational, epidemiologic, or other biomedical research studies.
- Strong understanding of the full research data lifecycle, including study start-up, database development, data collection, data cleaning, reconciliation, quality control, data delivery, and database closeout.
- Experience integrating and reconciling data from multiple sources, with the ability to identify and resolve complex data issues while maintaining data integrity, traceability, and appropriate documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex data management and programming activities, including defining technical approaches, managing competing priorities, identifying risks, and delivering high-quality work within established timelines.
- Strong quality assurance and attention to detail, including experience developing and implementing QC procedures and independently reviewing data, programming code, datasets, and other technical deliverables.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills, with the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary research teams, communicate technical concepts to diverse audiences, and provide guidance to less experienced data management and programming staff.
- Experience with additional programming and data technologies, such as R, Python, SQL, database architecture and development, Git or other version control systems, APIs, and/or other tools used to develop efficient, scalable, and automated research data workflows is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with clinical research data standards and regulations (e.g., NIH Common Data Elements, HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11, GCP, or FAIR principles) is highly desirable.
Basic Compensation: $110,000 - $140,000 yearly salary
The salary range listed reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this role at the time of posting. The final offer may vary based on skills, experience, geographic location, market conditions, and internal equity. Additional compensation may include performance incentives and program-specific awards. We do not use salary history to determine compensation, in line with applicable law.
