SDV Tooling & Equipment Manufacturing Engineer

Generalmotors
Warren, Michigan, United States of America Mid Level Full-time

Job Description

Global Manufacturing Electrical & SDV is looking for innovators who thrive in tough challenges and are passionate about tackling meaningful work that will shape the future of the automotive industry. This is a role for someone who embraces change, pushes through obstacles, and takes ownership of complex technical and manufacturing problems. While there will be long days and moments that test your resilience, you’ll find purpose in your work, flexibility to prioritize your family, and the support of a people-first culture. If you’re ready to grow, thrive, and make a real impact, we’d love to hear from you.

WHY: The purpose of this role is to lead the development and implementation of electrical tooling and hardware solutions within GM manufacturing plants and ensure the strategy is translated into repeatable, executable, and sustainable plant processes that support Global Manufacturing Electrical & SDV goals.

WHAT: As an SDV Tooling & Equipment Manufacturing Engineer, you will create, develop, and implement tooling and equipment solutions for Vehicle as a Tester (VaaT) deployment across manufacturing plants. You will lead plant implementation planning and execution for electrical tooling and hardware, including downtime coordination, installation planning, tooling development, onsite launch support, and continuous improvement.

HOW: Supporting the plants to make it happen for our customers through hands-on engineering, technical ownership, cross-functional collaboration, and practical solution development. This role requires an engineer who can turn ambiguous manufacturing and plant needs into robust tooling and hardware solutions. Success in this role depends on the ability to define the problem, create the concept, guide development, validate the solution, and lead execution through launch. This role is not limited to coordinating suppliers—it requires technical ownership of the solution from concept through plant implementation.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Serve as the execution lead for Vehicle as a Tester related tooling deployment across manufacturing plants, driving work from concept development through installation, launch, and early production support

  • Own plant-facing execution by translating manufacturing needs into practical tooling, hardware, and equipment solutions that enable scalable VaaT deployment

  • Lead development of requirements, specifications, design criteria, sourcing plans, validation activities, downtime plans, and installation strategies needed to implement tooling successfully in the plant

  • Provide technical leadership through concepting, design direction, prototyping, validation, supplier coordination, onsite issue resolution, and launch support

  • Partner closely with software, manufacturing, program management, conveyors, general assembly, industrial engineering, and plant teams to deliver flawless execution and sustainable solutions

  • Capture lessons learned, standardize what works, and drive continuous improvement for future VaaT processing and deployment needs

  • Help shape a forward-looking, adaptable culture that values ownership, urgency, collaboration, and disciplined execution

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Experience leading manufacturing execution, tooling, or equipment implementation in a plant environment, including installation, launch, debugging, and issue resolution

  • Strong understanding of manufacturing execution from concept development, planning, and sourcing through plant installation, launch, and stabilization

  • Demonstrated ability to lead from the floor, coordinate downtime and cross-functional execution, and drive work through completion with a high sense of ownership

  • Ability to define requirements, develop concepts, and solve open-ended manufacturing challenges with practical, technically sound solutions

  • Working knowledge of plant and cross-functional manufacturing organizations, including Conveyors, General Assembly, Industrial Engineering, and operations

  • Experience writing Statements of Requirements and supporting tooling acquisition, supplier coordination, and execution processes

  • Strong problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and change-management skills in a fast-paced manufacturing environment

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Experience in execution-focused manufacturing roles supporting electrical, SDV-related, or other complex plant processes

  • Experience designing or developing custom tooling, fixtures, interfaces, or electrical manufacturing support equipment

  • Experience leading launches, standardizing deployment methods, and scaling technical solutions across multiple plants

  • Knowledge of VaaT processing and manufacturing tooling support needs, with a track record of applying lessons learned to strengthen future deployments

  • Experience working directly with suppliers, plant teams, and cross-functional partners to deliver technically sound solutions while maintaining ownership and execution focus

This role is categorized as onsite. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location on a full-time basis.

The selected candidate will be required to travel on a regular basis (25-50%) for this role.

This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.
