Who We Are Looking For

Are you an engineering leader who still likes being close to the build? We're hiring a Process Automation Lead to run a team of developers building automated business workflows. You'll write code, review PRs, and set technical direction while also rethinking how manual, high-friction processes get rebuilt as reliable automation.

The role sits within Process Engineering & Automation at State Street Investment Management (formerly State Street Global Advisors). Day to day, you'll work with business architecture, business units, and technology teams to turn process designs into working software and decide how the team ships. We're moving toward a Product, Platform, and Service operating model. Part of this job is figuring out where AI and agentic automation fit into that picture as those tools mature. Not hype-driven adoption. Practical, well-engineered integration when it actually makes sense.

Key Responsibilities

  • Run the team. Manage and mentor a group of automation developers. Set technical direction, review designs and code, and hold the bar on engineering standards. Grow people, not just headcount.
  • Build the automation. Design, build, test, and support automated business workflows in Appian (or whatever replaces it). Stay hands-on where it matters. You're a working leader, not a slide-deck one.
  • Fix broken processes. Work with business architecture and business units to find the manual, high-friction workflows worth automating. Turn process designs into software that actually runs.
  • Own delivery end to end. Requirements through deployment and support. Solutions need to meet enterprise standards for security, resilience, controls, and maintainability. No shortcuts in a regulated environment.
  • Connect systems. Build integrations between the orchestration platform and the systems around it. Clean APIs, sensible contracts, nothing held together with duct tape.
  • Evaluate new tools. AI, agentic automation, whatever comes next. Pilot what looks promising, be honest about what doesn't work yet, and help shape the practice's tooling decisions.
  • Set standards and build consensus. Define delivery controls that fit a regulated firm. Work across product, platform, service, and delivery teams to get buy-in. Matrixed orgs don't move without it.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 10+ years in software engineering, process automation, or solution delivery. You've built and shipped production systems, not just designed them on whiteboards.
  • Led engineering or automation teams. You still write code or review it regularly. Both matter here.
  • Built workflow automation on a low-code or orchestration platform like Appian, Pega, or Camunda, including integrations with surrounding systems.
  • Solid fundamentals: APIs, integration patterns, testing, SDLC. You've improved processes and can point to specific results.
  • Worked in a regulated environment. You understand controls, and you know how to get things done in a matrixed org without a direct line of authority.
  • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

Preferred:

  • Investment management, asset management, or financial services background.
  • Appian experience. Bonus if you've used process modeling tools like ARIS or architecture repositories like Ardoq.
  • Enough familiarity with AI and agentic automation to have an informed opinion on where they're ready and where they're not.
  • Exposure to BPMN, capability modeling, or value streams. Cloud experience in AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Master's, MBA, or a relevant certification like TOGAF.

Salary Range & Benefits

Salary Range:

$120,000 - $217,500 Annual

The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
