Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking Principal or Sr Principal Technical Editor & Writer to join our team tasked to develop and modify technical manuals in support a ground-based radar system. As a Technical Editor/Writer you will be a key member of the team developing and modifying technical orders and manuals which are critical to maintain and operate the system. The successful candidates should have experience with the development of Technical Orders and Technical Manuals for military systems.

This new opportunity will be based in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Write, rewrite and/or edit technical documents such as technical procedure manuals, user manuals, programming manuals, service manuals, operational specifications, and related technical publications.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively technical specifications and instructions to a wide range of audiences through effective and concise technical writing.

  • Acquire system knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing performance of production methods, referring to technical specifications, blueprints, engineering illustrations, and trade journals.

  • Oversees preparation of illustrative materials, selecting drawings, sketches, diagrams and charts required within technical and operations manuals

  • Develop, update, and integrate remove and replace procedures within technical orders and maintenance manuals.  

  • Provide technical writing/editing for technical data, ensuring file configuration control, and compliance against contract requirements.

  • Conduct quality review of materials developed by other technical editors on the team.

This position can be staffed at a Principal or Sr Principal level based on the basic qualifications below.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must have an active U.S. Government Secret security clearance at time of application, current and within scope.

  • Principal Level: 5 Years with Bachelors; 3 Years with Masters; 1 Year with PhD. 4 additional years of experience required in lieu of a degree.

  • Sr Principal Level: 8 Years with Bachelors; 6 Years with Masters; 4 Years with PhD. 4 additional years of experience required in lieu of a degree.

  • Ability to travel up to 10% CONUS AND OCONUS

  • Complete understanding and application of principles, concepts, practices, and standards

  • Knowledge of industry practices and standards for the development of technical and operations manuals

  • Able to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, specifications, and system description documents

  • Experience with developing products IAW MIL-STD 40051-1 and 40051-2

  • Strong writing and editing skills, and experience in manipulating grammar

  • Experienced in querying authors for clarity and compliance purposes and must be skilled in Microsoft Word, MS excel, and PowerPoint

  • Experience in utilizing the Maintenance Manual change process

  • Experience writing in XML/S1000D International Specification for Technical Publications/IETM/Data Module writing (Arbortext, EAGLE, XMetal, or similar program)

  • Experience in an electronic/avionic field or in a Department of Defense (DoD) maintenance background.

  • Familiar with developing products IAW MIL-STD 38784B

  • Experienced with configuration management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experienced in creating multi-configuration, multi-effectivity indentured parts lists from engineering and LSA data

  • Ability to identify and possibly work around limited available engineering and LSA data

  • Experienced with Isometric IPB graphics and layout

  • Experienced in creating and revising IPB’s using MIL-DTL-38807 or MIL-PRF-38807

  • Experience with AGILE, SCRUM, DevOps

  • Previous experience developing manuals on complex ground systems

Primary Level Salary Range: $77,800.00 - $116,800.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $97,100.00 - $145,700.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
