Principal AI Engineer, SMAI
Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all.
Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.
SCOPE AND INFLUENCE
At the E5 level, Micron expects engineers to operate as recognized technical authorities whose impact extends well beyond a single team. In this role you will:
- Own architecture and technical strategy for major frontend manufacturing platforms and for the organization's AI-assisted engineering practices.
- Influence the technical direction of 20-50 engineers across multiple teams through design leadership, technical standards, and demonstrated results rather than direct reporting relationships.
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, including design patterns, code review criteria, and quality controls governing the use of AI-generated code in a high-consequence manufacturing environment.
- Mentor Senior and Staff engineers, developing the next generation of technical leaders while building the leadership capabilities required for advancement within Micron's Technical Leadership Program.
- Deliver business-critical technical outcomes with measurable impact on manufacturing operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
Product Engineering (approximately 60%)
- Design, develop, and deliver features for frontend manufacturing applications used across Micron's fabrication and assembly operations.
- Lead architecture and design reviews for significant features and platform changes, ensuring solutions meet requirements for reliability, performance, security, and maintainability.
- Contribute production-quality code across a heterogeneous technology stack that includes .NET, C++, Angular, Perl, and Python.
- Diagnose and resolve complex, cross-system technical problems spanning frontend applications, services, and integration points with manufacturing execution systems.
- Participate in the on-call rotation and serve as an escalation point for high-priority production incidents affecting manufacturing operations.
- Lead the modernization of legacy manufacturing applications, including technical assessment, migration planning, and incremental replacement of aging codebases.
- Partner with product owners, manufacturing stakeholders, and engineering managers to translate factory requirements into sound technical solutions.
AI-Assisted Engineering Enablement (approximately 40%)
- Define and maintain the organization's standards, guardrails, and best practices for AI-assisted software development.
- Evaluate, pilot, and operationalize AI development tooling, including coding assistants, agentic development workflows, and supporting integrations, and provide evidence-based adoption recommendations.
- Apply AI-assisted techniques to legacy code comprehension, documentation, test generation, and modernization of Perl and C++ systems where institutional knowledge is limited.
- Establish review practices and quality controls ensuring that AI-generated code meets Micron's standards for correctness, security, and long-term maintainability.
- Define, measure, and report on the effectiveness of AI-assisted engineering practices using agreed productivity and quality metrics.
- Deliver training, documentation, office hours, and hands-on coaching to raise AI-assisted engineering proficiency across the organization.
- Represent the organization in cross-functional architecture reviews, technical forums, and communities of practice related to engineering productivity and AI adoption.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline; equivalent professional experience will be considered.
- 10-12 years minimum of professional software engineering experience designing, delivering, and maintaining production applications.
- Demonstrated expertise in modern frontend development, including Angular or a comparable component-based framework, TypeScript, and web application architecture.
- Strong server-side engineering experience with .NET/C#, and working proficiency in at least one of C++, Python, or Perl.
- Demonstrated hands-on proficiency applying AI-assisted development tools and agentic coding workflows to production codebases, including the ability to articulate specific outcomes achieved, the limitations encountered, and the engineering judgment required to apply these tools safely.
- Proven experience leading architecture and design for complex systems that span multiple teams, services, or applications.
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction and raise engineering standards across teams without formal reporting authority.
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and leading technical design reviews.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical trade-offs to both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
- Ability to work on-site in Boise, Idaho, five days per week.
Preferred
- Experience leading the evaluation, rollout, and governance of AI development tooling across a team or organization.
- Experience building custom AI engineering assets, such as agent configurations, MCP servers, context and prompt engineering libraries, or CI-integrated automation.
- Experience modernizing legacy codebases, particularly Perl or C++ systems with limited documentation or institutional knowledge.
- Background in semiconductor manufacturing, industrial automation, manufacturing execution systems, or another high-availability operational technology environment.
- Experience with real-time or high-volume data visualization in web applications.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing strategy at scale.
- Experience defining engineering productivity and quality metrics and reporting them to leadership.
- Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
