What You Will Do:

Pratt & Whitney AutoAir is excited to announce an opening for a Ground Test Manufacturing Engineer.  This role offers a unique opportunity to work in a specialized field within engine design and operations.  P&W AutoAir’s Ground Test Division designs, manufactures and services test equipment to support development and aftermarket engine programs for all three major engine manufacturers.   This work involves design and manufacture of final level assemblies and all subcomponents and details. 

As a Ground Test Manufacturing Engineer, you will be responsible for developing manufacturing processes and tooling design for composite parts fabrication using approved models and drawings.  You will support production activities, troubleshoot issues, and implement process improvements to ensure efficient and high-quality manufacturing for the three-to-six-month build schedules.   You may be tasked with evaluating any damage from normal operations by our customers and developing repairs to restore the assembly or components to original or acceptable requirements. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Create written and illustrated manufacturing instructions, bills of material and outside purchase specifications per engineering drawings/specifications.

• Develop and improve manufacturing processes and tooling for composite parts.

• Work with production teams to ensure manufacturability and suggest improvements.

• Train production staff in new processes and techniques.

• Providing manufacturing support to design throughout conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design phases, to include validation, customer approval, manufacturing, and operational service.

• Support design with material selection based on usability and compatibility with current processes and equipment.

• Review and disposition nonconforming material to technical requirements.

• Develop and validate repair processes in conjunction with design team.

• Contribute to Cost of Poor Quality efforts, challenge existing processes, and drive improvements.

• Ensure compliance with established engineering methodologies.

• Use sound engineering judgment, technical expertise, and data analysis to make decisions or solve moderately complex tasks or problems.

Qualifications You Must Have

• Advanced Degree and 3+ years of experience in Engineering, Manufacturing, Military, Automotive, Aerospace or Aviation industry; OR Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of relevant industry experience.

• Experience with fiber-reinforced polymer composites, specifically: fiberglass, aramid, and/or carbon prepreg and wet layup (especially epoxy resin systems)

• Experience in advanced Composite and Bonded Structures manufacturing (ie. Fiber Reinforcement, Curing, Ovens and Autoclaves, Adhesives, Surface Preparation, etc.)

• Experience with design for manufacturing & assembly (DFMA), cost of manufacturing and reproducibility, and Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ)

• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, familiarity with geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) inspection equipment, tools and methods

Qualifications We Prefer

• Computer Aided Design Software experience: Creo / Windchill (Preferred) or NX / FiberSIM / TeamCenter

• Experience with mechanical manufacturing processes such as machining operations, joints, fasteners, and welding ideally within the Aerospace, Defense, or Automotive industry.

• Familiarity with Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques, such as ultrasonic testing, eddy current, FPI, camera optics, X-ray and others used in aerospace.

• Experience with Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA)

• Working knowledge of Pratt & Whitney shop practices & processes, quality standards, and inspections methods & tools

• Experience with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies (CORE/ACE/SixSigma, etc.)

• Project management experience and ability to lead large, complex projects.

• Ability to work and effectively communicate with all levels of management, shop personnel and customers.

The salary range for this role is 86,800 USD - 165,200 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
