Lead Water Plant Operator

Summary:
With minimal supervision, is required to operate and maintain the Water Treatment Plant. Schedule regular maintenance and address irregular maintenance of the equipment within the plant. Work closely with plumbers and other infrastructure personnel to resolve issues. Participate in goal-setting processes and strategic planning for mission support with other department leaders. Contribute to a safe working environment by coordinating employee trainings and identification and mitigation of environmental and job hazards. Maintain effective communications between departments and represent department as needed at operational meetings. Provide suggestions and recommendations for re-hiring, termination and advancement of staff. Routinely utilize independent judgment and discretion to solve problems and identify potential issues.
Position Responsibilities:
Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
Complies with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals, policies and procedures. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
Is designated the Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) for the facility.
Operates to the best possible standards providing an uninterrupted water supply.
Monitors reverse osmosis units and ancillary equipment parameters.
Makes adjustments to water plant equipment ensuring operation guidelines are followed
Starts, operates and secures reverse osmosis units and all associated auxiliary equipment essential to water plant operation.
Monitors water plant chemistry making chemical adjustments as necessary to ensure water quality standards are met or exceeded.
Oversees or performs all water quality testing.
Accountable for the proper operation and maintenance of the water plant for compliance with applicable regulations and/or permit requirements, including monitoring and reporting requirements.
Maintains cleanliness of water plant.
Willingness to carry a radio or pager for after hour’s call out’s
Completes maintenance records and documents all maintenance performed and maintains operating logbooks and databases as required.
Responds to unscheduled equipment or process failures.
Ensures efficient and economical operation of station water production equipment. Completes maintenance records; maintains laboratory and operating logbooks and databases as required.
Maintains control of plant tools, manuals, repair parts, assemblies and consumables.
Maintains inventory accuracy at 98% or better.
Ability to work alone or within a team depending on situation.
Trains Water Plant Operators on Water Plant operation and equipment as directed.
Advises the Utilities Supervisor or their on-ice representative of the status of water production equipment and systems.
Coordinates with the Utilities Supervisor or their on-ice representative to order repair and/or spare parts, maintenance parts, assemblies, tools and consumables.
Willingness to work a rotating shift; day, swing or night shift.
Performs duties in support of division metrics (as provided by supervisor).
Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly, affected by this position’s work activities.
Evaluates job hazards and communicates information to staff verbally and in writing through various venues, including weekly and/or daily crew meetings.
Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy and with the highest degree of professionalism.
Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with their subordinates as needed to relay information they need in order to be successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, projects, Quality Standard Procedures, and safety practices.
May be required to work outside on various jobsites in extreme cold weather and environmentally challenging conditions.
Interacts with other partner companies, the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person. Is kind, courteous, cooperative and professional at all times.
Participate in dormitory chores while deployed to Antarctica.
Performs other duties as required.
Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:
High School diploma or GED
Colorado Class “C” Certification (or other states’ equivalent) required.
Minimum 6 months of Supervisor or Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) experience is required.
Reverse Osmosis experience is required.
Expected Skills and Competencies:
Mechanical aptitude with the ability to handle multiple tasks at once is required.
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the maintenance and operation of reverse osmosis water treatment plants is required.
Thorough knowledge of the methods, hazards, and safety precautions related to reverse osmosis water treatment plants is required.
Ability to maintain a professional attitude and to work efficiently in a stressful environment is required.
Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
Preferred:
Previous experience with remote Polar Logistics operations is preferred.
Two years of experience in water production/treatment operations is preferred.
Physical and/or Other Requirements:
Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
No clearance requirement but the contract and/or the site requires US Citizenship to be approved for access. (includes NACI / T1, MRPT, CAC): Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
