Historic Vehicle Technician

Generalmotors
Grand Blanc, Michigan, United States of America Remote Mid Level Full-time

Job Description

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

General Motors Heritage Operations is seeking a Historic Vehicle Technician to support the management, maintenance, and presentation of GM’s Heritage Vehicle Collection, including antique, historic, design concept, specialty marketing, and race/pace vehicles. This role is responsible for ensuring these vehicles are properly maintained, operational, and show-ready in accordance with leadership direction.

This position will be located at the GM Heritage Center & Archive located in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Occasional travel may be required both locally and nationally to support vehicle operations, safeguard vehicle integrity, and assist with on-site presentations at shows and events but is not an essential part of the role. The role requires hands-on mechanical and electrical expertise, including working with electric vehicles. While many vehicles are production examples, others are pre-production or one-of-a-kind prototype vehicles which must be handled with the highest level of care and attention to detail.

The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with internal teams and external suppliers to support the Heritage Vehicle fleet, as well as work directly with GM executives and leadership in support of show events. Strong mechanical and electrical intuition, creativity, flexibility, and problem-solving skills are essential to ensure vehicles are maintained to the highest standards and perform flawlessly in high-visibility environments.

If you have a passion for automotive history, innovation, and craftsmanship—and enjoy working with iconic vehicles that showcase the past, present, and future of GM—we encourage you to apply.

What You'll Do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Maintain a safe working environment, adhering to all GM safety standards and following Global Manufacturing System (GMS) operating principles.
  • Perform hands-on mechanical and electrical repairs and maintenance on Heritage Collection vehicles.
  • Coordinate the shipping, transportation, and handling of all vehicles, always ensuring safe and secure movement.
  • Drive the implementation, documentation, and continuous improvement of Best Practices and Standardized Work processes.
  • Maintain open, clear, and effective communication with Heritage Operations leadership.
  • Develop and maintain detailed records for each historic vehicle, including operating procedures and safe-handling guidelines.
  • Ensure accurate and thorough documentation of all repairs, modifications, and maintenance activities performed on each vehicle.
  • Machine and fabricate small replacement parts as required using equipment such as a Bridgeport mill, engine lathe, and tire mounting/balancing machines.
  • Meet established timing, quality, and cost objectives while supporting high-visibility projects and events.
  • Maintain a highly organized, clean, and safe work area.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to work extended hours and adjust schedules to ensure project timing is met.
  • Travel on short notice, including occasional extended travel assignments.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Skills and Experience):

  • Minimum of five (5) years of hands-on experience working with machine tools, measurement devices, and mechanical tools; candidate must supply personal tools.
  • Proven ability to rebuild engines, transmissions, chassis components, and complete vehicle interior systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of tools, materials, equipment, and manufacturing or repair processes relevant to the assigned area.
  • Advanced automotive mechanical and electrical expertise required to diagnose and troubleshoot concept and historical vehicles.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform immediate, on-the-spot vehicle repairs, including cosmetic, electrical, and mechanical work.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and effectively perform vehicle repairs in remote or off-site environments.

  • Familiarity with corporate safety standards and established shop protocols, including Global Manufacturing System (GMS).
  • Valid driving record, with the ability and intent to obtain a chauffeur’s license.
  • Confidence and professionalism when communicating with all levels of management, including GM leadership and senior executives.
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance while representing the organization at show venues and external events.
  • Self-motivated individual with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment

Education and Training
