Head of U.S. Defined Contribution, Managing Director - State Street Investment Management
Role Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and dynamic leader to serve as Head of U.S. Defined Contribution. This executive leadership role is responsible for defining and executing the strategy for State Street Investment Management’s U.S. Defined Contribution business. The successful candidate will drive commercial growth, shape product and solution strategy, strengthen key industry relationships, and position State Street as a leading partner to retirement plan sponsors, consultants, advisors, recordkeepers, and other retirement intermediaries.
The role requires a leader who combines deep retirement-market expertise, strong commercial judgment, and a collaborative leadership style. This individual will work across investment, product, distribution, marketing, operations, and corporate functions to translate strategy into execution and deliver differentiated solutions that improve retirement outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute the strategic vision for the U.S. Defined Contribution business, identifying opportunities created by evolving client needs, regulatory developments, competitive dynamics, and industry trends.
- Drive commercial outcomes by partnering closely with distribution, product, and investment teams to grow assets, revenue, market share, and strategic client relationships.
- Lead the development, commercialization, and positioning of innovative retirement solutions, including target date strategies, retirement income, indexing, active investments, and solutions addressing emerging participant and plan sponsor needs.
- Serve as the senior external representative for the U.S. Defined Contribution business with plan sponsors, consultants, advisors, recordkeepers, industry organizations, and other key market participants.
- Use data, market intelligence, and business analytics to assess opportunities, prioritize investments, allocate resources, and evaluate the effectiveness of strategic initiatives.
- Build strong partnerships across investment management, product, distribution, marketing, operations, legal, risk, and other corporate functions to drive disciplined execution and deliver an exceptional client experience.
- Lead, develop, and inspire a high-performing Defined Contribution team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, talent development, and succession planning.
- Partner with clients and industry stakeholders to advance retirement outcomes and strengthen State Street’s position as a thought leader in the evolving U.S. retirement marketplace.
- Maintain a strong understanding of the regulatory and fiduciary environment affecting defined contribution plans and incorporate relevant developments into business, product, and client strategy.
Education and Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or relevant professional designation preferred.
- 15+ years of experience in the U.S. Defined Contribution and retirement industry, including significant leadership responsibility and commercial accountability.
- Deep understanding of the U.S. retirement ecosystem, including plan sponsors, consultants, advisors, recordkeepers, regulatory considerations, investment solutions, and participant needs.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute business strategies that drive asset growth, client retention, revenue expansion, and market differentiation.
- Strong strategic mindset, with the ability to translate a long-term vision into clear priorities, actionable initiatives, and measurable outcomes.
- Proven record of leading high-performing teams, developing talent, and creating a culture of collaboration and accountability.
- Exceptional communication and executive presence, with the ability to engage and influence senior clients, boards, consultants, industry groups, and stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Experience working effectively across investment, product, distribution, and operating functions within a complex global organization.
- Sound commercial judgment and a demonstrated ability to make decisions using market insights, business analytics, and disciplined financial assessment.

Salary Range:
$170,000 - $267,500 AnnualThe range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
