Description -

This role is responsible for supporting the development, validation, and delivery of camera and imaging systems. The engineer participates in the creation of comprehensive test plans, develops test methods and automation, and evaluates camera hardware, firmware, image quality, and system performance.

The role applies working knowledge of camera systems, imaging principles, test engineering, and data analysis to validate product requirements and identify performance or reliability issues. The engineer develops test tooling, fixtures, scripts, automation, and laboratory setups and collaborates with camera engineering, firmware, software, mechanical engineering, systems engineering, manufacturing, and external development partners to deliver high quality camera products.

Responsibilities

• Participates in reviews of camera system requirements, product specifications, design data, and validation plans.

• Develops and executes test plans for camera modules, sensors, lenses, image signal processing, firmware, mechanical integration, and complete imaging systems.

• Evaluates camera performance using objective and subjective image quality methods.

• Tests image quality characteristics including sharpness, resolution, color accuracy, white balance, exposure, dynamic range, noise, distortion, shading, autofocus, field of view, depth of field, low light performance, and motion performance.

• Validates camera features such as automatic exposure, automatic white balance, autofocus, high dynamic range, digital zoom, optical zoom, framing, tracking, and low light processing.

• Designs portions of engineering solutions used to test and evaluate camera systems, equipment, devices, and imaging features based on established engineering principles and product specifications.

• Builds and maintains camera test tooling, fixtures, scripts, automation, laboratory setups, and data collection systems.

• Develops Python or similar scripts to automate test execution, image capture, log collection, data processing, performance analysis, and report generation.

• Collaborates with camera hardware, firmware, software, mechanical, systems, quality, and manufacturing engineers to validate product designs, test strategies, and engineering methodologies.

• Performs system level debugging and supports root cause analysis of camera hardware, firmware, image quality, thermal, optical, mechanical, and integration issues.

• Collects, analyzes, and interprets test results, image data, system logs, and performance metrics to identify trends, failures, and opportunities for improvement.

• Supports troubleshooting of issues involving image sensors, lenses, camera modules, interfaces, power, timing, synchronization, firmware, and image processing pipelines.

• Develops and implements validation schedules, requirements, and test coverage for subsystems within new and existing camera products.

• Tracks defects, test results, risks, and validation progress using tools such as JIRA and test management systems.

• Monitors product and manufacturing test data to identify camera performance, yield, reliability, and quality issues.

• Implements continuous improvements to test coverage, automation, laboratory processes, and validation methods.

• Works with senior engineers to investigate systemic camera and imaging issues and develop reliable, cost effective, and high quality test solutions.

• Collaborates and communicates with internal teams, suppliers, original design manufacturers, contract manufacturers, and outsourced testing and development partners.

• Supports camera module qualification, design verification, engineering builds, manufacturing readiness, and new product introduction activities.

• Develops technical conclusions, recommendations, validation summaries, and written reports based on test results and data analysis.

• Documents test procedures, laboratory configurations, scripts, known issues, and engineering knowledge to support consistent execution and knowledge sharing across the organization.

Education and Experience Recommended

• Four year or graduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Imaging Science, Optics, Physics, or another related technical discipline.

• Equivalent professional experience or demonstrated technical competence may be considered.

• Typically two to four years of experience in camera engineering, imaging, hardware validation, firmware validation, system testing, test automation, or a related field.

• An advanced degree with limited professional experience may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience testing cameras, imaging systems, embedded devices, video products, or consumer electronics.

• Understanding of fundamental imaging concepts such as exposure, gain, frame rate, dynamic range, signal to noise ratio, color processing, resolution, and optical performance.

• Experience with image sensors, lenses, camera modules, image signal processors, or embedded camera platforms.

• Experience with objective image quality testing tools, charts, laboratory lighting, and controlled test environments.

• Experience with tools or standards such as Imatest, DxO Analyzer, ISO 12233, or equivalent image quality measurement methods.

• Experience with Python, MATLAB, C, C plus plus, or another language used for test automation and data analysis.

• Experience using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, digital multimeters, light meters, color meters, and logic analyzers.

• Familiarity with camera interfaces and video technologies such as MIPI CSI, USB, HDMI, I2C, SPI, or related protocols.

• Experience with defect tracking, source control, continuous integration, and test management tools.
