This is your opportunity to join the Missile Defense Sensors (MDS) Department as the Upper-Tier Missile Defense (UTMD) Program Area Software Engineering Cross Product Team Leader (CPTL) in Woburn, Massachusetts. The CPTL is the program area’s top leader among the software leadership team across the UTMD portfolio and represents the functional discipline across the program teams.  The CPTL is the embodiment of the Raytheon leadership values within the software engineering team and builds a cohesive, high performing team.  The leader is collaborative across disciplines within the program area to execute the software development objectives and integrate within the program team.

The candidate will apply the latest technologies, agile processes and be responsible for Earned Value Management principles and metrics in an agile environment. The candidate will also develop the vision for and guide the implementation of a common software engineering vision across the UTMD programs. This position requires understanding of cost estimation and/or developing government technical proposals. The candidate will require the ability to understand how their efforts affect the “big picture” of the radar systems. The MDS department’s mission is to provide world class software to be used in radar and command and control systems deployed on land and sea. Our software teams employ Agile development to rapidly and continuously deploy capabilities for our customers.


This role is onsite in Woburn, MA.

What You Will Do

  • Develop the software leadership team, staff and individual contributors to best meet the needs of the programs and align with career development
  • Manage the cost, schedule and technical performance of multiple programs and contracts across the UTMD portfolio
  • Prioritize and manage backlog of tasks focusing on rapid delivery of Minimally Viable Products to satisfy customer needs
  • Manage competing priorities associated with troubleshooting, site sustainment, development of new capabilities and technical refreshes
  • Process owner for all software development activities
  • Hold monthly meetings with senior management to review project metrics
  • Provide executive management level summary briefings required as needed based on project status
  • Drive towards a culture that values continuous improvement and supports team well-being
  • Provide staffing needs to the department leader


Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
  • 10+ years previous experience with agile software leadership
  • Experience with cost estimation and developing government technical proposals


Qualifications We Prefer

  • 5+ years previous experience with agile software or cross-disciplined engineering leadership of 50+ engineers organized as a scaled agile team
  • Master’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering
  • Software development experience in a DoD environment
  • Proven ability to build teams, develop staff and improve team effectiveness
  • 10 years real-time software development experience in a DoD environment
  • Exposure to Agile frameworks such as scrum, scrum at scale, SAFe and DevSecOps
  • Experience with Git or other Configuration Management Systems
  • Experience with DOORS or other Requirements Tracking Systems
  • Working knowledge of Linux or UNIX operating systems
  • Oversight of cost, schedule and technical performance of a software team
  • Experience on XBR, AN/TPY-2, COBRA DANE, QEWR, UEWR, SRP or radar data processing domain knowledge
  • Experience as a Product Owner, Scrum Master or related industry certification
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, Microsoft Azure, GitLab, Jenkins, Coverity and/or other DevOps tools
  • Experience with real-time, multi-threaded systems
  • Proven ability to interface with customers and lead technical solutions to complex user requirements
  • Familiarity with Integrated Product Development System (IPDS) and/or RTX Lifecycle Program Management (RLPM)

The salary range for this role is 157,200 USD - 298,800 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
