Overview

The Assistant Properties Supervisor reports to the David Geffen School of Drama/Yale Repertory Theatre (DGSD/YRT) Properties Supervisor and serves as co-supervisor to the Prop Shop Staff, Prop Interns, and students assigned to work in the Prop Department. Standard hours are 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

Essential Duties

  • Assist in developing and implementing properties department procedures, policies, paperwork, and workflow.

  • Assist in coordinating, supervising, and evaluating the work of staff and interns.

  • Collaborates with appropriate staff, designers, and students in establishment of project plans and provides options that fit into established budgets.

  • Maintains and monitors expense budgets. Processes departmental purchasing charges in timely manner.

  • In coordination with Properties Supervisor, attend budget meetings, production meetings, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals and notes sessions as necessary.

  • Assures the adequate supply of materials and expendables needed for specific show needs and general shop operations.

  • Oversees the properties inventory tracking systems.

  • Assist in supervising and coordinating with student managers the efficient load‐in, strike, and changeover in all performance venues in accordance with published production schedule.

  • Assist in overseeing staff in maintaining the safety and efficiency of all shop operations.

  • Assist in overseeing maintenance and repair of properties equipment, storage facilities, and workspaces, including shop tools and stock weapons.

  • Performs various craft tasks, as assigned by Properties Supervisor.

  • Works occasional nights, weekends and holidays.

  • May teach in area(s) of expertise.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Strong planning, leadership, interpersonal and communication skills. Strongly demonstrated ability to build a team environment, collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, interns, guest artists and other professionals representing a wide diversity of personalities.

2. Strongly demonstrated ability to train, advise and mentor students in a professional setting.

3. Strongly demonstrated ability to multi-task, manage, and prioritize complex workload in a calm and professional manner. Strongly demonstrated ability to set/meet deadlines, set/follow schedules, and give/follow clear instructions.

4. Demonstrated experience in budgeting, and ability to manage in a theatrical environment. Ability to work independently and in a team setting. Knowledge of job-related health and safety issues; ability to identify potential hazards. Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.

5. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, showing initiative and problem-solving abilities. Demonstrated knowledge, w/high standards regarding production values, in multiple areas of prop construction

including but not limited to sewing, upholstery, carpentry, carving, mold making and sculpting, and prop special effects.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1. MFA in Theatre. Pistol permit and/or experience with stage weaponry.

2. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Photo editing software, and inventory management systems.

3. Demonstrated knowledge, w/high standards regarding production values, in multiple areas of prop construction including but not limited to sewing, upholstery, carpentry, carving, mold making and sculpting, and prop special effects.

Required Licenses or Certifications

1. Valid driver's license

Physical Requirements

1. Ability to repeatedly lift, carry, push or pull up to 50 lbs.

2. Ability to stand for long periods.

3. Ability to climb stairs and ladders.

4. Drive cargo van and departmental truck.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Assumes primary responsibility for a program, service, activity, operation or function in an assigned area. Develops objectives, practice and procedure and identifies resources to ensure accomplishment of operational goals. 2. Coordinates day-to-day operations in order to achieve designated goals. Ensures effective management and leads the development and implementation of best practices. 3. Designs and implements quality control metrics to identify areas of risk. Analyzes, recommends, and implements strategic solutions to minimize risk. 4. Develops a variety of complex report and other written materials. 5. Provides guidance to and collaboration with internal and external partners as necessary. 6. Develops, oversees and monitors budgets. 7. Develops and maintains specialized training. 8. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
