A Day in the Life

The Vice President, Implant Engineering is a senior leader within the ICT R&D organization, responsible for the strategy, execution, and capability development of all implant engineering disciplines across Structural Heart, Coronary, and Renal Denervation therapies. This role provides functional leadership for implant design, verification and validation, structural integrity, valve testing, and sustaining engineering to ensure safe, effective, and compliant implantable products through all phases of product development and commercialization.
While this role leads a defined functional area, it reports to the ICT R&D Leader and carries shared accountability for the overall success of ICT R&D and strong connection to the business therapy leadership team. In partnership with peer functional and therapy leaders, this role is responsible for ensuring alignment, integration, and collective delivery of new product development (NPD) and Post market programs across all ICT therapy groups—driving portfolio execution, technical rigor, and enterprise outcomes beyond individual team boundaries.

         

         

  • Set and drive the global implant engineering strategy aligned to ICT and therapy-level business priorities.
  • Drive identification of novel implantable device solutions including new materials, designs, and approaches. 
  • Lead large, geographically distributed implant engineering teams, including ownership of talent strategy, succession planning, and organizational capability building.
  • Provide functional oversight of Structural Integrity and Valve Test Labs, ensuring robust test methods, technical rigor, and regulatory compliance.
  • Own site leadership responsibilities for the Santa Ana, CA facility.  Support significant growth, culture, infrastructure, and partnership with cross-functional partners.
  • Define multi-year plan for Santa Ana cross-functional facilities needs to align with overall Medtronic site optimization strategy and therapy roadmap needs. 
  • Partner with Therapy Team and Product Development Leads to align implant technical execution with portfolio priorities and timelines.
  • Ensure consistent application of design controls, risk management, and verification/validation practices across all implant platforms.
  • Represent Implant Engineering with senior executives and external partners including physicians and suppliers, serving as a credible technical and people leader.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 15+ years (13+ with graduate degree) of progressive engineering leadership experience, including leadership of large, complex, regulated product organizations.
  • 13 years of managerial experience
  • Deep expertise in implantable medical devices and regulated Class III product development.
  • Deep expertise in Structural Heart valve design and therapy. 
  • Demonstrated success leading through organizational scale, transformation, and site growth.
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to influence across functions and therapy teams.

Location: Onsite in Santa Ana, California

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$225,000 - $375,000

 

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

This position is eligible for an annual long-term incentive plan.

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico. Base pay is based on numerous factors and may vary by job-related knowledge, skills, experience, etc. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).

 

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to all regular employees: Incentive plans, 401(k) plan plus employer contribution and match, Short-term disability, Paid time off, Paid holidays, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, Employee Assistance Program, Non-qualified Retirement Plan Supplement (subject to IRS earning minimums), and Capital Accumulation Plan (available to Vice Presidents and above, or subject to IRS earning minimums).

 

Regular employees are those who are not temporary, such as interns.  Temporary employees are eligible for paid sick time, as required under applicable state law, and the Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Please note some of the above benefits may not apply to workers in Puerto Rico.
