This position is for an entry level Design Engineering professional, working independently in our Gearboxes and Starters team. Checks completed layouts, communicates with other engineering personnel, resolves design problems, designs new products, maintains existing products, resolves difficult-to-complex design problems, and implements common procedures.

This role is onsite, in Rockford, Illinois. This role may be eligible for relocation.

What You Will Do:

• You will review and design component layouts, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and compliance with engineering standards and project requirements.
• You will collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to coordinate designs and resolve complex technical and production problems.
• You will develop new products and processes while improving and maintaining existing ones to meet current and future business needs.
• You will creates and evaluates design proposals, including layouts, calculations, prototypes, cost studies, and considerations for manufacturability and materials.
• You will design, develop, and test structures, components, and fabrication processes while implementing standard work to optimize efficiency and quality.

What You Will Learn:

• You will learn advanced design fundamentals — interpreting requirements, creating layouts, performing tolerance stack-ups, and applying engineering standards with precision.
• You will learn problem‑solving skills in real manufacturing environments — diagnosing design and production issues, collaborating with manufacturing teams, and implementing practical fixes.
• You will learn product development skills — how to design new components, iterate prototypes, evaluate manufacturability, and support the full lifecycle of a product.
• You will learn about cross-functional collaboration — working closely with engineering peers, operations, and other stakeholders to align designs and ensure project success.
• You will gain hands-on engineering disciplines — exposure to structural design, materials (metal and non-metal), and fabrication processes.

Qualifications You Must Have:

• Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) obtained prior to start.
• U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.
• Experience in a design engineering environment.

*Experience may be obtained through on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects.

Qualifications We Prefer:

• Strong understanding of tolerance stack-ups and GD&T.
• Experience with design tools such as CAD and Matlab.

The salary range for this role is 57,200 USD - 108,800 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
