Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector is seeking a Manager Structural Engineering 1 to join our MEP Team in San Diego, California. This position is 100% onsite and cannot accommodate telecommute work.

As a Manager you will supervise as the Analysis Value Stream Leader (VSL) for Reflectors & Booms product lines that provide both programmatic and technical Analysis leadership to the PASS Operating Unit (OU). You will have responsibility for quality, technical execution, schedule, and cost. As the leader, you will manage the product value stream analysis team and work closely with program leadership, the manufacturing and testing teams, technical leaders, and functional subject matter experts within the Mission Enabling Products Business Unit.  You will be expected to routinely perform analysis tasks in support of programs in conjunction with leadership roles and responsibilities. The product value stream analysis leader will report to the Analysis functional manager.  The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in analysis engineering and leading analysis activities.

Leadership Role and Responsibilities:

  • Analysis authority for value stream - Experience with composite analysis, material properties and allowables, dynamic analysis, static analysis, etc.

  • Manage resources in collaboration with analysis functional manager - Escalation, assignments, employee reviews employee development, DLY management, hiring, recruiting, and verification of work completeness and accuracy

  • Own program performance - SQDEC daily management. Escalation of technical, schedule, and financial issues. Lead and/or support peer reviews at product level. Track first pass yield (FPY) and on time delivery (OTD) for analysis value stream

  • Program execution and support of program requirements - Ensure technical compliance. Manage risk assessment and management across programs in value stream. Identify needs for allowables development. Ensure static/dynamic test plans are properly coordinated with tool design group. BOE’s and assumptions in support of proposals

  • Standardize, and improve, analysis processes within value stream - focus value stream lessons learned, best practices, and continuous improvement implementations.

Detailed Analysis Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assess structural integrity of metallic and composite structures using traditional closed form solutions, as well as finite element analysis (FEA)

  • Interact with design and development teams (teams include specialists in Design, Quality, Materials, Manufacturing) to create and verify creative design solutions that meet all requirements (technical, cost, schedule)

  • Generate Finite Element Models and perform FEA for normal modes, linear static stress, dynamic response/stress, thermo-elastic distortion, and hygroscopic distortion

  • Support development of flight hardware from preliminary through detailed design, drawing release, manufacturing, integration, verification testing, and transportation

  • Plan and oversee material characterization tests of various materials used in the design of composite structures

  • Reduce material characterization test data into analysis input properties and material capability properties

  • Prepare and make presentations summarizing structural assessment results for internal review boards and external customer design reviews

  • Assist in assessment and disposition of discrepant hardware and hardware anomalies

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in STEM with 5 years working in an engineering environment

  • Demonstrated leadership experience of an engineering team on structural analysis efforts

  • Experience in space and aerospace structural analysis of composites structures, including: bonded joints, sandwich panels and metals

  • Experience with product definition (specifications, SOW's, drawings) and design and verification processes

  • Experience with finite element analysis, composite laminate theory, and dynamic analysis

  • Experience with composite materials manufacturing processes and applications for extreme environments

  • End item test analysis and support experience including: static load testing, dynamic testing (sine, sine burst, random, acoustic, modal) and thermal exposure (thermal cycling and thermal vacuum) testing

  • Experience in constitutive model development and implementation

  • Experience in Femap, NASTRAN, Altair Hyperworks, and ESI VA One

  • Must be a US citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or MBA with minimum of 7 years of experience in Engineering

  • Ability to receive a security clearance

  • A broad understanding of engineering, manufacturing, cost and schedule execution, scope management, and risk management is preferred

  • Must be a self-starter and possess strong interpersonal, and leadership skills with the ability to work independently or as part of a team

  • Must have the ability to prioritize and manage time effective

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are preferred

Northrop Grumman Total Rewards 

Primary Level Salary Range: $133,000.00 - $199,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
